Post-Hurricane: Rebuilt and Ready for 2018!

The damage done to Rincon by Hurricane Maria was very severe. However, there is one simple truth: you can’t stop the awesome! After a lot of hard work to stabilize Rincon and get everything accessible again, everyone could focus getting Rincon ready for the coming season. Much of the economy in Rincon and Puerto Rico in general depends heavily on Tourism. People from all over the world love escaping to this beautiful island to enjoy a unique tranquility and peaceful ambiance, as well as take advantage of the natural thrills out in the ocean. Rincon really is an awesome place and no Hurricane can rob it of its beauty for long. After removal of fallen trees and debris, and then more trees and debris, and then a few more trees and debris several Rincon businesses could start rebuilding again. Rincon Paddleboards was left with a fairly daunting challenge – the beach was gone. For a business setup and run from the shoreline of the beach, you can see how this would be a large obstacle. However, if you know Damanio and Chikako (owners of Rincon Paddleboards) then you understand that this wasn’t going to stop them. With enough hard work and ingenuity just about anything is possible. They rebuilt the beach. Literally, they put the sand back up by the shoreline, the nearby coastal areas, replanted and replaced trees that had fallen, reinforced the barren rootballs of surviving trees that somehow still stood upright, and took advantage of the piles of dirt/mud left from nearby river flooding in the field of the premises and replaced what Maria washed away near the ocean. This was a lot of work and it all started with shovels and wheel barrows until heavy machinery became available again. After a lot of hard work, soon the island started to grow back stronger and continued to naturally add to the beach. New tides, currents, and swells would help add sand and leave it sticking to the new chunk of beach at Rincon Paddleboards. The reefs are still alive and the fish continue to thrive in the marine reserve of Tres Palmas. In many areas nature has sprouted back so heavily that it’s hard to tell anything ever happened! Basically, Rincon Paddleboards is back and ready for business! We are rebuilt and ready for 2018! Come on down, give our economy a much needed boost, and have the time of your life enjoying our SUP Tours, Night tours, and Surf Lessons. We’re ready for you!

What a Great Season!

This season I have had the pleasure of working with an amazing group of lifeguards who come from all over the states and bring their own unique safety and life experiences to Rincon Paddleboards.

I am thankful for the trained and watchful eyes of these young professionals who not only look over our own customers, but the beach goers too. Their knowledge and expertise as trained watermen make me feel at ease when dealing with our growing clientele.

Together we help educate visitors on the beach about water safety to ensure that everybody, young or old, can enjoy the ocean with our same level of respect, confidence and love. The love for the sea is what brings us together as lifeguards, watermen, and beach goers.

They say, ‘once a lifeguard, always a lifeguard!’ Those that have never been a lifeguard will agree, the love for the ocean is what bonds us together in brotherhood.

This season we also had the privilege of trying a new sport – SUP Fitness! Katie, who is certified in SUP Fitness and owns her own business in Georgia, spent the season with us and taught several classes to the locals and tourists.
We had a great time, a great workout and learned a new way to SUP! Now not only can you do standup paddle boarding and paddle board surfing but you can change things up with SUP fitness too!

We’ve had a wonderful season so far and want to thank you all for your support!

Snorkeling at the Rincon Marina

While many tourists snorkel at Steps Beach, enjoying the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve, you won’t want to miss out on the Rincon Marina during your time in our surf town. Not only does the marina have a great swim beach and great waters for paddle boarding, it’s also a great place to snorkel.

Recently, Chikako, Rachel and a few of their friends took the morning off to snorkel at the marina and to photograph the beautiful coral, fish and of course, for a little fun too. As you can see from their photos, it is a majestic place to explore!

As with any snorkeling adventure, be sure to have the proper gear, snorkel with another person and go when the conditions are optimal and the waves aren’t dangerous. Next time you stop by the marina take the opportunity to check out the beautiful sea life – you just might discover a sea turtle, manatee and other exciting animals.

When you request a paddle board delivery, be sure to ask us about our snorkel gear rentals.

Enjoy your visit!Snorkeling Collage

Night SUP Tours from Rincon Paddle Boards using Bottom Mount LED Lights

Night Tours with Rincon Paddle Boards

Part 1

Recently, we purchased SUP LED light kits and tested them out with a group of friends. We had a awesome time and are very excited to be offering Night Tours along the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve in the very near future!

For this test tour we tried out the variety of colors that illuminate the water under the boards, the location for best views of the corral and fish and took some beautiful pictures. This was also a great opportunity to get feedback from friends, brainstorm ideas and practice this new tour so that it will be a memorable and enjoyable experience for our clients!

This is a great tour for people who already know how to paddle and for those who feel comfortable being in the open water at night. The LED lights give an entirely unique and new experience to those who love to SUP and view underwater sea life. The needlefish love the lights, you will enjoy beautiful views of sea fans, coral reefs and there are sure to be surprise visits by other sea life as well!

For our next test tour we want to try out snorkeling under the boards and hopefully, also offer this as part of a Night Tour package. Stay tuned for more updates about this exciting new tour we plan to make available to everyone soon!

Paddle Boarding with the Manatee

Manatee 1

Damiano came across this manatee while out paddling.

As you pull your paddle through the calm waters off the coast of the Rincon Marina, you see  a large grey shape take form a few yards away. Your heart skips a few beats as your first thought is ‘shark’ and you start to panic. Before you reach full panic mode and wobble off your board and then subsequently flail around in the ocean, take a deep breath and look again. If you haven’t scared it away yet, you’ll see that most likely, it’s a manatee.

Of the many beautiful things you will see when paddle boarding along our coastline, the manatee or Antillean Manatee might just be the most impressive. The manatee is one of the most famous animals of the ocean waters of Puerto Rico and listed as a ‘vulnerable species’ by The International Union for Conservation of Nature.  The manatee has many nicknames – sea cow, sea pig and mermaid just to name a few.

The waters surrounding our island are prime breeding grounds for this ‘subspecies of the endangered West Indian Manatee.’ In areas that are protected from severe wave action, that provide some source of fresh water and harbor aquatic vegetation you are more likely to see a ‘sea cow.’

If you happen across one of these rather large ‘mermaids,’ remember to respect its space, enjoy this special moment and be thankful that the Caribbean Sea provides us with so many wonders.
