Whale Watching from Tres Palmas Reserve

Whale Pic 2While you’re out enjoying a few hours of paddle boarding during the day or even at sunset, you just might get the opportunity of a lifetime to see humpback whales off in the distance towards the North.

Every winter the humpback whales pass through our waters during their migration as they return to the North Atlantic for the summer. As they venture along our coastline they are mating and giving birth to the next generation of humpback whales.

Many of these whales originate from as far as “New England, Iceland and Newfoundland.” These gentle and beautiful beasts can reach 50 feet in length and weigh as much as 50 tons. Sighting a whale off our shores is truly an exciting and spectacular event as they rise to the surface for oxygen and to entertain us with their dance.

While these sightings are rare, they happen almost weekly during this time of year in Rincon. We most recently saw the whales last Friday during an LED Sunset/Night Tour – it was very exciting to say the least! Being on the Endangered Species List and with only 15,000 humpback whales left in the world, they deserve our protection and respect.

There are several places to catch a glimpse of these majestic animals, but there is no better place than in the water, relaxing on our paddle boards, feeling as if you are right out there with them right here in our beautiful Rincon, Puerto Rico.

Night SUP Tours from Rincon Paddle Boards using Bottom Mount LED Lights

Night Tours with Rincon Paddle Boards

Part 1

Recently, we purchased SUP LED light kits and tested them out with a group of friends. We had a awesome time and are very excited to be offering Night Tours along the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve in the very near future!

For this test tour we tried out the variety of colors that illuminate the water under the boards, the location for best views of the corral and fish and took some beautiful pictures. This was also a great opportunity to get feedback from friends, brainstorm ideas and practice this new tour so that it will be a memorable and enjoyable experience for our clients!

This is a great tour for people who already know how to paddle and for those who feel comfortable being in the open water at night. The LED lights give an entirely unique and new experience to those who love to SUP and view underwater sea life. The needlefish love the lights, you will enjoy beautiful views of sea fans, coral reefs and there are sure to be surprise visits by other sea life as well!

For our next test tour we want to try out snorkeling under the boards and hopefully, also offer this as part of a Night Tour package. Stay tuned for more updates about this exciting new tour we plan to make available to everyone soon!

Gilligan’s Island

For my birthday this year, Damiano and I, with a few friends, visited Guanica to check out Gilligan’s Island and what an awesome adventure it turned out to be!

Gilligan’s Island is very beautiful, a great place to swim, snorkel and even paddle! (More on that later). It’s a very small island about a mile off the coast of Guanica and a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike! The island is managed by Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural Resources and is part of the Biosphere Reserve of Guanica.

The area is largely covered by mangroves and some corral so it’s a great place to snorkel as the water is crystal clear. Be sure to bring a cooler for water, lunch and snacks and lots of bug spray!  There are picnic pavilions, BBQ pits, restrooms and changing areas but no shops or restaurants so come prepared.

To get here you can rent kayaks, take the ferry, hire someone to take you over or even paddle as the waters are pretty calm! Stay tuned on our Facebook page and blog as we are considering the idea of offering paddle board tours to this beautiful little paradise.

Paddle Boarding with the Manatee

Manatee 1

Damiano came across this manatee while out paddling.

As you pull your paddle through the calm waters off the coast of the Rincon Marina, you see  a large grey shape take form a few yards away. Your heart skips a few beats as your first thought is ‘shark’ and you start to panic. Before you reach full panic mode and wobble off your board and then subsequently flail around in the ocean, take a deep breath and look again. If you haven’t scared it away yet, you’ll see that most likely, it’s a manatee.

Of the many beautiful things you will see when paddle boarding along our coastline, the manatee or Antillean Manatee might just be the most impressive. The manatee is one of the most famous animals of the ocean waters of Puerto Rico and listed as a ‘vulnerable species’ by The International Union for Conservation of Nature.  The manatee has many nicknames – sea cow, sea pig and mermaid just to name a few.

The waters surrounding our island are prime breeding grounds for this ‘subspecies of the endangered West Indian Manatee.’ In areas that are protected from severe wave action, that provide some source of fresh water and harbor aquatic vegetation you are more likely to see a ‘sea cow.’

If you happen across one of these rather large ‘mermaids,’ remember to respect its space, enjoy this special moment and be thankful that the Caribbean Sea provides us with so many wonders.
